When faced with an impossible choice, Fr. Maternowski was a true witness to the Franciscan commitment to justice and peace. In approaching an enemy soldier, he believed in the goodness of humanity and trusted that just actions could secure the safety of brothers in arms.
In remembering Fr. Maternowski’s sacrifice, we honor his commitment to his vocation as a Franciscan, as a priest, and as a chaplain in the US Army—a man for others. When faced with few options, he used his three-fold role to walk the path forward to peace.
The Fr. Maternowski Remembrance Project is a ministry of the Franciscan Friars Conventual of Our Lady of the Angels Province, USA. Support for the Fr. Maternowski Remembrance Project helps maintain his two memorial sites as well as ongoing commemorative events, including candlelight vigils, prayer services, and community gatherings that promote the justice and peace Fr. Maternowski died to protect.
